Known as Nono, José Delgado featured in Real Betis’ first season back in La Liga only a handful of times, but he has shown promise and is another great youngster from a club willing to take risks on canteranos. He became the eleventh Betis prospect to be given a first team start by manager Pepe Mel since Pepe joined the club in 2010.
Nono joined Betis’ cadet side from Atletico Madrid because he wanted to move further south. He is very happy at Betis. He is comfortable playing in the center of the mid-field and has previously played in the pivot position. In recent years he has featured further up the pitch in more attacking positions. His contract with Real Betis runs until 2013 but the lad is in no rush to move on. Despite interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid in signing him for their B sides, his current contract has the option to extend for another three years and there are many reasons for him to stay with Los Béticos for longer. There is a large core of youngsters in the Betis side that have grown up training together and bonds like that can be very strong. In addition, he is more likely to receive first team opportunities under Pepe Mel then with joining a new squad. His tournament this summer in Estonia could have an impact on what sort of role he has with his club next season. Regardless, he is a great talent and proof yet again of the power of a strong cantera.
