Dani Sotres has grown up in Racing’s youth system and has grown into one of the nation’s top young keepers. Last season was his first of senior team football as he was the starter for the Racing B side. This season he got his introductory taste of La Liga football, coming on in relief of an injured Mario to tend the net in a 3-0 loss to Malaga. The youngster started the next game, another 3-0 loss this time too Mallorca. These two results are a commentary on how poor Racing Santander was this season rather than any indication of Sotres’ skill or potential.
He is considered the pearl of the Cantabrian cantera which is why the recently relegated Racing is so keen to sign him to a new contract. He has provided a selection headache in net for U19 manager Julen Lopetegui who has a number of talented keepers to choose from, continuing a rich and successful tradition in Spain of developing some of the world’s best keepers.
